Mother's Day Berries

Cakes are, and always have been, a part of celebrations in The Family for as long as I can remember.

There hasn't been a celebration where we haven't had a cake of some sort.

Where we get the cake from varies from year to year.

Some years we do Jack's Place.

Other years we do Bengawan Solo.

If a cake at Four Leaves bakery catches our eye, we get it.

And if the cake at Breadtalk looks fancy and pretty, we go for it too.

The confectionary is a big, almost integral, part of our celebrations.

Then again, it's all very flexible and there's no rule.

Just so long there's something sweet, something pretty, we get it.

One year we did macarons for Mother's Day.

Another year we did nyonya kuehs for Father's Day.

It's much more enjoyable when we're flexible.

Like this year.

We had a blueberry yogurt tart from Paris Baguette for Mother's Day.

Honestly, it wasn't my first choice.

But in the midst of wandering around all the cake shops in the mall, I caught sight of this glorious-looking 3D tart going at a most excellent price.

So after some discussion we went for it instead.

Back at home we put the tart in the fridge (because it felt like something best eaten at close of day)

Which, we did. .

Even though by that hour we'd already finished a bowl of noodles (with cuttlefish ball, meat ball, sausage, vegetables and tomatoes), a dinner of sam lor hor fun bought from the zichar stall, and an additional bowl of soup with more balls, more vegetables, more tomatoes, plus one egg.

By all means we should have been very, very full.

And we were.

But this was a tart with a very beautiful layer of slightly sour, slightly sweet yogurt, a lovely filling of dark blueberry, a nice soft sponge, a base of crunchy (yet not so crunchy) graham cracker at the bottom, and a generous heap of blueberries on top.

We made a fun time of it- eating the tart up bit by bit whilst trying not to let the blueberries roll here, there, everywhere.

I'm happy she enjoyed the tart.

I'm happier still that we made a special memory together.

Especially since after that we still had space left over for (our regular) cups of vanilla ice cream.
